Political sign recycling offered
CENTER TWP — Political signs from Butler County may be used again in the future, or at least, their individuals parts may be.
The Butler County Democratic Committee hosted a sign recycling collection Thursday at the Clearview Mall, where people of any political affiliation could drop off signs, now that the midterm election is over.
Karen Barbati, Butler County Democratic state committeewoman, said the committee decided to host the collection to keep signs from simply being thrown away.
“We just hated to see all this go in dumpsters, and we have seen so many signs in the community,” Barbati said. “They have recycling places in Pittsburgh you could take them, but we wanted to make it convenient for people.”
The committee had a trailer set up in the Clearview Mall parking lot from noon until 5 p.m. Thursday to collect signs. Barbati said that by around 1:30 p.m., more than 10 people came to drop off signs.
The volunteers would separate the wiring from the banners, and Barbati said committee members would haul the trailer to a recycling site in Pittsburgh over the weekend.
“It’s the first year we’ve done it, but it has gone well,” Barbati said.
Debbie Barger, a volunteer for the Butler County Democratic Committee, said she spent a lot of time putting up the signs, and wanted to make sure she took as many back down as she could.
While the recycling event was only set for Thursday, Barbati said the committee might do another one in the southern part of Butler County.
“If we have another party in Cranberry, we have thought of doing another one down there,” Barbati said.
