‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign buckles down

Butler County residents can get free child passenger seat checks for children over the next two weeks.

State police said child passenger safety technicians and the PSP will offer the checks through Nov. 27. The service is part of “Click It or Ticket,” a broad effort by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to promote seat belt compliance.

For caregivers who would like support, technicians can:

• inspect child seats for their suitability

• provide instruction on installing safe seats or install safe seats directly

• illustrate how to harness children in seats

• alert caregivers to child seats the NHTSA has recalled.

Caregivers can attend a “Click It or Ticket” event from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at 102 Mahood Road in Center Township. They also can call their nearest state police office for further details.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has reported that 1,230 people were killed in roadway crashes last year. Of these, 378 were not wearing seat belts — or 31% of those deaths.

Pennsylvania law requires any person age 18 or older to wear a seat belt when driving or riding in the front passenger seat of a vehicle.

PennDOT, which has partnered with state police and NHTSA to promote the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, said drivers pulled over for other violations face additional fines if they or their front-seat passenger aren’t wearing seat belts.
