BUFFALO TWP — A homeowner was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns Tuesday after a fire that started in a wood burner spread throughout the home.

Firefighters from three county departments — two from Allegheny County and one from Armstrong County — responded to the fire, which started around 8:15 a.m. at 546 Fleming Road.

Sarver Volunteer Fire Company Chief Mike George said the fire started at a wood burner in the basement and spread throughout the two-story home, including the attic, resulting in heavy damage.

He said the couple that own the building were home when the fire started, and the husband was taken by ambulance to West Penn Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

About 30 firefighters from the Sarver, Buffalo Township and Saxonburg volunteer fire departments from Butler County, Harrison Hills and Fawn Township from Allegheny County and the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department from Armstrong County responded to the alarm.
