BUTLER TWP — A silver SUV appears to have struck a fenced-in natural gas substation on Fairground Hill Road below Butler Senior High’s lower parking lot, crossed both lanes, caught fire, and crashed into the bank on the south side of the road below the Butler Intermediate High.

A motorist turning into the bowling alley saw the vehicle on fire and said a police officer who arrived on the scene opened the driver’s side door and pulled the driver across the road to safety.

Fire and ambulance crews soon arrived and the driver was placed on a stretcher and rushed away by Butler Ambulance Service.

A People’s Gas worker could be seen grabbing a huge wrench from his truck and running up Fairground Hill Road to the damaged substation.

Firefighters sporadically doused the substation before the People’s Gas truck arrived.

The front end of the SUV was heavily damaged by flames and continued to emit smoke for some time as first responders investigated the accident.
