Beaver County man charged in fatal Cranberry Township crash

A Beaver County man is in Butler County Prison facing charges related to a three-vehicle crash Sunday, Dec. 4, afternoon that claimed the life of a Cranberry Township man.

Darren Michael Martin, 34, of Aliquippa, was arrested following the 2 p.m. crash at the intersection of Route 19 and Ehrman Road, where Bertram Forsyth, 46, was pronounced dead, according to township police.

Martin and Forsyth were alone in their vehicles. Police have not identified the occupant or occupants of the third vehicle.

Martin has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, DUI, recklessly endangering another person, and traffic citations including failing to stop at a red light and reckless driving. He is jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Police said Martin’s truck struck Forsyth’s vehicle as it was entering Route 19 from Ehrman Road.

Several witnesses told police that a man, later identified as Martin, was driving a Ford E-450 U-Haul truck north on Route 19 when he drove through a red light at a high rate of speed and hit two other vehicles, police said in an affidavit.

Witnesses also reported to police that the truck made a “careless” U-turn at the intersection of Route 19 and American Way, proceeded to travel north on Route 19, and ran a red light at the intersection of Route 19 and North Boundary Road just before the crash, police said.

An officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol coming from Martin and said Martin performed poorly on field sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test that Martin took indicated the presence of alcohol, police said.

A police sergeant who serves as a drug recognition expert also conducted field sobriety tests and noted the possible presence of a drug because Martin had constricted pupils, police said. Martin did not consent to a blood test, so a search warrant was obtained for a blood test at a hospital, police said. The blood was sent to a lab for alcohol and drug tests.

A preliminary hearing for Martin has been scheduled for Friday before District Judge Kevin Flaherty in Cranberry Township.

Route 19 was closed for about five hours between Victory Drive and Glen Eden Road while police investigated the crash and the damaged vehicles were removed, police said. The Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company, Harmony Fire District and Adams Area Fire District also responded to the crash.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the station at 724-776-5180.

Court records show Hopewell Township police in Beaver County charged Martin with DUI in September 2013 following a traffic stop on June 16 that year. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to serve up to two years of intermediate punishment.
