Winter weather advisory begins at 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for freezing rain that is expected to begin early Thursday morning.

The advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, until 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, but the forecast calls for an 80% chance of freezing rain beginning after 4 a.m. Thursday and ending before 9 a.m.

Little, if any, accumulation is expected tonight, but wind gusts reaching 31 mph are in the forecast.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 100% chance of freezing rain ending before 9 a.m., and then becoming rain. Little to no accumulation is expected, with the high temperature reaching 39 degrees. Wind gusts will reach 32 mph.

There is a chance of rain and snow showers from Thursday night through Sunday, Dec. 18.

Because of the potential for icy roads as a result of freezing rain overnight Wednesday into Thursday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has imposed travel restrictions for certain vehicles on major highways including Interstate 79, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 80.

Tier 1 restrictions begin at 1 a.m. Thursday on I-79 from the Turnpike to I-80 and I-80 from I-79 to Exit 173. Vehicles subject to Tier 1 restrictions are tractors without trailers, tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers; tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers; enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks; passenger vehicles towing trailers; recreational vehicles/motorhomes; school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches; and motorcycles.

Restrictions on other highways are also going into effect. PennDOT will announce the restrictions on variable message boards, the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps.
