Hundreds of parents shopping at the Clearview Mall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will find holiday gifts selected from a certain storefront will all be free.

Chad Krumpe, a state trooper who has been coordinating Toys for Tots in Butler County for about six years, said about 2,200 children are registered to receive gifts through the program this year, which is about average for Butler County.

Families who registered to receive toys will get one “large” toy, two “medium” toys and two “small” toys for children ages 1 through 10, and one toy of each size for infants and children 11 and older.

The toys are donated new or items purchased through cash donations. According to Krumpe, donations to Toys for Tots this year could have been better.

“We’re a little lower in the amount of toys than usual,” Krumpe said Wednesday. “Tonight we’ll go shopping to restock — last year we spent $60,000 to restock toys.”

Krumpe said the coordinators of Toys for Tots try to accommodate families who need holiday gifts for their children, working with their schedules and removing barriers that keep them from attending the distribution.

Marine Corps veteran Sam Zurzolo said Marines started Toys for Tots in Butler County in 1983, and volunteers like Krumpe keep the program successful.

“There’s a lot of people who need toys for Christmas,” Zurzolo said.
