Vo-Tech artists win plow program

Motorists who see a giant octopus coming toward them during bad weather this winter can thank four student artists at Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School, who won a multicounty contest with their aquatic design.

The vo-tech school was announced Friday morning as the winner of the state Department of Transportation District 10 “Paint the Plow” contest.

Students throughout District 10, which includes Butler, Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana and Jefferson counties, are invited each year to paint a PennDOT snowplow with a certain theme for the contest.

This year’s theme was “put down the device in snow and ice.”

Vo-tech graphic arts student Haley Zediker’s design won her the opportunity to complete the plow, according to graphic arts teacher Lee Ann Clutter.

Haley and her classmates, Viktoriya Semenenko, Ben Frenchak and Sophia Zang, spent two weeks painting the plow, Clutter said.

She said paint as well as some vinyl was used on the plow, and the school’s collision repair class applied clear coat when it was complete.

“As their instructor, I am extremely proud of them,” Clutter said. “We look forward to competing each year.”

All designs were placed on the District 10 website, and voters could select their favorite design earlier this month.

Butler County Vocational-Technical School’s 1,253 votes earned the top designation of “fan favorite.”

The plows painted by all nine schools in District 10 that participated in the contest will be used to clear snow and ice throughout the district this winter.

Keystone Oaks High School’s plow, which depicts a white Yeti angrily stepping on a smart phone, earned honorable mention in the contest.
