Slippery Rock budget has no tax increase

Town used to have the second-highest tax rate

SLIPPERY ROCK — Borough Council approved its 2023 budget at a meeting Tuesday night.

The balanced budget of $1,252,780 is similar to last year’s, according to Christian Laskey, borough manager, with no tax increase for the sixth year in a row.

“We were once the highest tax rate after Butler City,” Mayor Jondavid Longo said at the meeting. “It’s a pleasure working with a council that’s proactive in getting things done that need done.”

Excess revenue from the budget will be placed in a capital purchase fund, according to Laskey.

“It could be (for) a new roof, a new skid loader, other big purchases. It’ll be up to council what’s done with it,” he said.

The budget holds an additional $48,000 in funds compared to 2022, which Laskey said stems from an increase in earned income tax and people moving to the borough.

“We’ve had an uptick in residential building, a lot of growth, which is good,” he said.

Laskey also announced that the borough is waiting on funds from a $97,000 Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency grant for its police department.

The grant will fund license plate readers for three intersections in town, as well as dash cameras and body cameras for the department’s staff of four part-time and four full-time officers.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 10.
