The former American Legion post in Lyndora is being demolished this week, after being condemned by the Butler Township Commissioners years ago.

The demolition began Monday and will be completed as the weather allows.

Butler Township manager Tom Knights said he believes the demolition should take about 30 days, but he anticipates that weather will affect the process.

“It has been an ongoing process to get to the point that it’s being demolished,” Knights said.

Crews worked in the cold air Monday to take down the building, which Knights said was converted into an apartment building following the legion’s closure.

The two-story building, which sits on a slight incline on Bessemer Avenue, needed a crane to be demolished.

The street is off the main roads in Lyndora, and only a few cars are permitted to be parked around the street where the demolition is taking place.

Chesapeake Street from Armco Drive to Bessemer Avenue is closed during the demolition, and parking limits are in place for some nearby streets, according to Knights.

The Butler County Housing and Redevelopment authorities bid out the demolition work, Knights said.

Lyndora has a newer American Legion, Post 778, is at 150 Legion Memorial Lane, and is still open for events and gatherings.
