‘Light Fairies’ brighten Christmas spirit in county
Multiple residents with Christmas displays in Summit Township and the surrounding area recently received a visit from the “Light Fairies.”
The “fairies“ left small keys with notes attached in the mailbox of select people to thank them for their efforts in spreading Christmas cheer.
“We love your lights! Thank you for being a ‘key’ part in keeping the Christmas Spirit alive! #TheLightFairies Christmas 2022.”
A search of the hashtag on Twitter turned up no results, and a Facebook search of the term didn’t result in any related groups. The hashtag appears to be as mysterious as the fairies themselves.
But despite the mystery, the key givers have brought a little bit of joy to the people who received the key.
“It’s one of those little random acts of kindness that people can do that make your day,” said Felicia Simitoski Kearns, whose husband, Matthew, puts up a Christmas display every year.
“After I posted it, I had other friends comment that they’re going to start dropping off keys in the neighborhood to houses with a lot of lights. So I think that’s pretty cool,” she said.
It was actually not the first time that one resident, Joe Albert, had received a key for his lights. He also received a key from the Light Fairies in 2021.
Simitoski Kearns has talked to several people who have received a key this year. She encountered only people who had received the key for the first time.
“We’ve never gotten one before,” said Simitoski Kearns. “I didn’t know anything about it until I saw another post that somebody in Cabot was looking to find who left it in their mailbox, and they couldn’t find anybody.”
Regardless of when the first keys were handed out, both Simitoski Kearns and Albert have said that they feel it’s a nice appreciation of their displays. Both said that they put out extravagant displays for the community.
The Simitoski Kearns and her husband have received Christmas cards in the past from people who don’t know them but like their displays, whereas Albert didn’t know if his displays were being appreciated. The Light Fairies gift of a key is a nice confirmation of that appreciation.
“Sometimes you think people don’t care about Christmas anymore, and you do all of this for nothing,” said Albert. “Then you see little things like that in your mailbox or you have people stopping, looking, it makes you appreciate it.”
“If you have somebody appreciate what you’re doing, maybe it’ll bring the Christmas spirit to somebody.”
