A new taproom to be developed on the site of a former asphalt company has been approved by Penn Township supervisors.

Helltown Brewing of Pittsburgh will open a taproom in the largest of the handful of buildings on property at the corner of Airport Road and Fairway Lane.

Some residents of the neighborhood attended a meeting of the township zoning hearing board in July, where Helltown representatives sought a continuation of the variance received in the residential zone by the former asphalt company.

The residents feared noise, traffic, accidents, lowered property values and driving under the influence, among other scenarios, as a result of the taproom.

One resident decried Helltown Brewing setting up shop on property directly across Airport Road from Penn Christian Academy.

Other residents spoke in favor of the taproom.

Zoning hearing board members approved the variance continuation in July.

Helltown representatives said their other taprooms have a rural, family feel, and many parents ride bikes to the taprooms with their children.

No liquor will be served, and food will not be prepared on-site.

Helltown’s craft beers will be delivered to the new taproom from its Pittsburgh brewery, Joe Perotti, attorney for Helltown co-owner Arnold Burchianti, said.

The supervisors approved the taproom at their January meeting.

It is not known when development of the site will begin.
