15-year-old dies in Sunday crash in Slippery Rock
A 15-year-old boy was killed Sunday in a one-vehicle crash on a snow-covered road in Slippery Rock Township.
The teen was a passenger in a 2011 Honda Pilot driven by a 17-year-old boy from Butler when the accident happened at 6:15 p.m. on Route 8 at Kiester Road, according to state police.
The victim was a student in the Slippery Rock Area School District, superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said after a school board meeting Monday night.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road while traveling north. The vehicle went over an embankment and into a tree.
Responding crews reported over the scanner that the driver and passenger were trapped inside the vehicle. The driver was found unresponsive and taken to AHN Grove City for injuries, according to reports.
The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
State police reported the driver had minor injuries.
Route 8 between the intersection of Kiester Road and Davis Lane/Kiester Road was closed while police investigated, according to a news release from the state Department of Transportation.
Slippery Rock and Harrisville volunteer fire companies, Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, Butler Ambulance Service and Slippery Rock VFC ambulance also responded to the scene.
Also called to the scene was the state police Troop D crash reconstruction team.
The school district is not disclosing the student’s name at this time, Angelucci said.
“The high school staff, counselors and even Butler County Center for Community Resources applied for counselors to help and assist us with what was going on at our high school today, with our grieving students and staff,” he said. “They were a big help.”
“So we want to acknowledge their support but also make sure that the family is being supported in whatever way we as a school district can do to help them also,” Angelucci added.
Angelucci thanked the staff, district and counselors in his superintendent’s report before the school board Monday, he said.
Angelucci said that the 17-year-old boy who survived the crash has been released from the hospital, following treatment for his injuries, he said.
