Viral post about Walmart crime pronounced fake

Butler Township police announced Wednesday that a viral Facebook post regarding an attempted kidnapping at Walmart did not occur.

Officials said on their Facebook page that the story of a woman being followed around the store by a man in a gray hoodie was never reported to police.

“The Butler Township Police take these types of calls seriously and will respond as such. Please dial 911 immediately to request a police response,” the post said.

The scam post, which went live Jan. 17, garnered hundreds of shares, but has since been taken down.

The post recounted a story of a woman shopping in Walmart with her child in a car seat, when she repeatedly sees a man in a gray hoodie. Then at her vehicle, the man in the gray hoodie attempts to take the car seat with the child in it, but eventually runs off.

Township police reiterated that no calls of this type were made in the last month, and to call 911 if emergencies occur.
