Bates

Tommie L. Bates Jr., 75, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, to his parents, Juliana Thienpont and Tommie L. Bates Sr.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tommie is survived by his wife, Ruth L. Halstead Hull Bates; his sons, Brad A. Bates (Claudia) and Matthew T. Bates (Ashlee); his stepchildren, Kathryn R. Hull and Geoffrey R. Hull; his grandchildren, Koen, Clayton, Levi and Grady; and his sisters, Pamela Ferguson, Marsha McIlwain and Barbara Rose.

Tommie graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1966. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the eastern U.S. and Vietnam.

After leaving the Army, Tommie began a lifelong career in land surveying, a career which fed his love of the great outdoors and wildlife, including hunting, scuba diving, cycling, photography, hiking and traveling.

BATES — A celebration of life for Tommie L. Bates Jr., who died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at Peter Loring Chapel.

Interment with military honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, American Hiking Society or Embrace Hospice.
