Of Note: The Independence Seaport Museum is located on the Penn’s Landing waterfront and has one of the largest art and artifact collections in North America. Museum activities include exhibits on the region’s waterways, boat making demonstrations, along with boat and kayak excursions on the Delaware River.
USS Olympia, Commodore Dewey’s flagship at Manila Bay, is the only survivor from the age of all steel hull warships in the late 19th century. Self-guided tours are included in museum admission The World War II era submarine USS Becuna is located nearby with guided tours for an additional cost.

Of Note: Arlington National Cemetery was created during the Civil War when Robert E Lee’s home was confiscated. Today more than 400,000 people are buried there, including many famous military and political leaders. Notable locations to visit are the Lee Mansion, Kennedy grave sites, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Changing of the Guard Ceremony.
The mainmast of USS Maine is part of a burial site for 230 members of the ship’s crew which can be found on Memorial Drive behind the Tomb. The memorial is designed to replicate a gun turret. Memorials for the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia are also nearby.
Located nearby on George Washington Memorial Parkway is the Marine Corps Memorial based on the Pulitzer Prize winning photograph of the Iwo Jima flag raising during World War II. Often associated only with that war, this statue lists all major actions of the Marine Corps from 1775 to the present. On a local note: Sgt. Michael Strank from Conemaugh, Pa., was the leader of this six-man team. Six days later he was killed in action.

Of Note: A torpedo tube and armored porthole from Maine are displayed at this location near the National Aviary on the north side of the city. One plaque on the memorial is dedicated to Friend Jenkins from Pittsburgh and another honors all Allegheny County veterans who served in the war. This memorial was dedicated on Sept. 15, 1914, by the Veterans of Foreign Wars as part of their first national convention held at the Schenley Hotel (now the William Pitt Union at the University of Pittsburgh).
