Explore George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital at Gettysburg
Suddenly transformed into a Civil War field hospital in July 1863, George and Elizabeth Spangler’s once thriving farm in Gettysburg now stands as the best surviving corps level field hospital from the battle.
Acquired by the Gettysburg Foundation in 2008, the dilapidated structures and property’s condition required extensive preservation work between 2012-2019 to restore and rehabilitate original buildings.
The property’s picturesque view is revealed as visitors travel down the drive of the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital. History comes alive as guests walk the grounds, hear the stories and feel the emotions at this family farm forever changed by the battle.
Explore the grounds and the restored barn and summer kitchen where more than 1,900 wounded Union and Confederate soldiers received care. Listen to the stories of the soldiers, the surgeons and medical caregivers, the Spangler family’s experiences, and the civilians’ humanity during the battle and its aftermath.
Open for visitors on summer weekends, Friday through Sunday, the George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital offers guests an immersive and interactive experience and memorable interactions with living historians providing insights and authentic accounts from the Civil War era.
The historic site is open for the 2023 summer season June 9 through Aug. 13.
