Local emergency fire and medical departments set to receive annual grant money
The Office of the State Fire Commissioner within the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency has announced $31 million in grants will be distributed to 36 local emergency fire and medical departments.
The grants, through the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program, were announced last week.
Funding this year will reach 2,336 fire, rescue and emergency medical organizations that applied across the state.
Grants are open to all fire companies, volunteer ambulance services and volunteer rescue squads in Pennsylvania.
“First responders not only risk their lives, but they also sacrifice much of their time to protect our communities,” state Rep. Tim Bonner, R-17th, said. “We thank all our first responders, from our firefighters, paramedics and other emergency and rescue professionals. Their efforts and cooperation are unmatched.”
The grant program, initiated in 2000, provides money for construction or repair of facilities, purchase or repair of equipment, debt reduction and training.
Funding amounts are contingent on the recipients filing their grant agreements with the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.
“First responders are heroes because they put their own lives on the line to protect people and property,” state Rep. Aaron Bernstine, R-8th said. “Our local fire and Emergency Management Service (EMS) personnel are dedicated to keeping all of us safe. Their efforts and cooperation are unmatched.”
