Karns City district works to prevent mold after classrooms damaged by water

The Karns City Area School Board received an update on repairs at Sugarcreek Elementary School during its meeting Monday night.

When temperatures bitterly plunged into the single digits around Christmas Eve, a pipe burst at Sugarcreek Elementary while the students were on break, causing water damage in two classrooms.

The district is working with two companies on what district superintendent Eric Ritzert classified as “mold remediation.”

Ritzert said the companies were able to identify sections of walls that did not appear damaged, but were at risk for molding if left unattended.

While work on the classrooms is ongoing, the district hopes to make heavy repairs this weekend, as students won’t be in class Friday.

Ritzert also recommended to the board that the district reapply to use Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs) in coming years.

FIDs allow the district to educate students even if something such as inclement weather prevents them from being at school.

The application process through the Pennsylvania Department of Education must be completed every three years.

The board also approved the 2023-24 budgets for the Butler Area Vocational-Technical School and Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV.

Karns City Area’s vo-tech budget was $512,263, which is a $5,146 decrease over the previous year’s budget.

The school district’s budget for the IU was $12,433, showing no change from last year’s budget.
