MARION TWP — Supervisors have learned that work on the township’s $4.2 million sewer project may begin in late May.

Dave Neil, of EADS Group, an inspection and engineering contractor in Clarion, provided a project update at the township’s monthly meeting Monday, Feb. 13.

Funding for the project, which will benefit more than 111 homes, comes from a 2020 Community Development Block Grant. County commissioners awarded contracts to county and regional contractors on Jan. 18 to replace the antiquated sewer system.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Neil said Mortimer’s Excavating, of Pulaski, Lawrence County, and Bison Construction, of Fairmont City, Clarion County, will begin work in late May or early June. Electric installation details are being worked out with Right Electric, of Butler.

A final preconstruction meeting will take place prior to commencement of the work.

Neil updated supervisors on the purchase of grinder pumps and remaining resident easements requirements.

Supervisors also approved connecting Kozy Rest Campground in Harrisville with the sewer system.

Project updates

The township was awarded a $50,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant for playground renovation, with $20,000 required from the township.

Jason McBride, supervisor chairman, said that the township’s match could be in money or like services to renovate the playground.

Supervisors approved a parks and recreation grant application to be submitted to the county. Funds, if granted, will be applied to the required matching contribution, McBride said.

Supervisors learned Ray Road Bridge will be inspected by the state on Aug. 13. McBride said the bridge needs to be painted and has no structural issues.

Robert Hairhoger and Steve Nevel, of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Company, told the township the aging fire siren needs to be addressed. Hairhoger said function and reliability are becoming an issue.

Supervisors plan to address the issue at the March 13 meeting as well discuss the township starting an ambulance service.

The community Easter egg event will be April 1 at the township community park.
