PHOTO: Butler’s swinging bridge makes state travel blog’s list

Butler’s little swinging bridge, known mainly to current and former residents of the city’s Island neighborhood, was included among the stately, scenic and snaking swinging bridges throughout Pennsylvania in a state travel blog.

A story on uncoveringpa.com entitled “9 Can’t Miss Swinging Bridges in PA” showcased the most unique swinging bridge (along the Little Toby Rail Trail in Jefferson County), the most daunting bridge to cross due to movement and 25-foot height above the Kiskeminetas River (Hyde Park walking bridge, Armstrong County), and a swinger in Trough Creek State Park, Huntingdon County, that offers views of both Rainbow Falls and a boulder precariously balanced on the edge of a cliff.

But the final swinging bridge to be mentioned in the article, and coming in at the shortest among the nine, was the bridge over Sullivan Run between Rotary Park and the rear of Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.

The blog said Butler’s own swinging bridge “isn’t quite as nice as some on this list, but it does really get swinging, so it’s a lot of fun to cross,” according to blogger Jim Cheney.

“Of all the Pennsylvania swinging bridges on this list, I don’t think any are shorter than this unnamed one in the city of Butler,” Cheney wrote. “However, if you find yourself exploring this corner of Western (Pennsylvania), it’s definitely worth checking out.”
