State police said Monday, Feb. 20, they are investigating if a motorcycle crash on Route 422 that resulted in a leg amputation of the cyclist was caused by driving under the influence.

According to a crash report, Jason R. Porter, 43, of Portersville, was driving west on Route 422 in Muddy Creek Township on Sunday on his Harley-Davidson around 3 p.m. when he struck a guard rail on the bridge over Lake Arthur.

Porter was wearing a helmet, but he suffered a leg amputation as a result of the crash.

A medical helicopter flew to the scene where first responders set up a landing zone on the bridge, according to Butler County emergency dispatch. The eastbound lane also closed to traffic to allow the helicopter to land.

Porter was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, for treatment of his injuries, the report said.

The state police’s crash report indicated that the situation is still under investigation, and that the investigating trooper observed or had reason to believe the operator was under the influence. According to Josh Black, public information officer for Troop D, toxicology reports have not been received.

Portersville Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department, Prospect VFD, Butler Ambulance Service and Portersville EMS responded to the scene.
