2 vehicles, garage lost in Kelly Road fire
CLAY TWP — A Thursday, Feb. 23, afternoon garage fire on Kelly Road destroyed the structure and two vehicles.
Crews responded to 164 Kelly Road for a fire at a three-stall, stand-alone garage around 1 p.m. and shortly afterward closed the entrance to Kelly Road at Route 8 to allow multiple tankers to bring water to the scene.
Justin O’Hara, chief of West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire appears to be accidental.
“The homeowner was doing work on a car (and) caught some material inside on fire. The homeowner tried extinguishing it, and it had spread to some oil,” he said.
A fire extinguisher the homeowner used was expired, which resulted in the fire’s further spread, O’Hara added.
“This is a reminder to make sure your fire extinguishers are up to date,” he said.
When crews arrived on scene, the fire was fully involved. It took one hour to extinguish.
There was no damage to any nearby structures and no injuries, according to O’Hara, but the two cars inside the garage were destroyed.
Responding to the scene were volunteer fire companies from Oneida Valley, Prospect-Franklin Township, Marion Township, North Washington, Eau Claire, Unionville, Slippery Rock and Harrisville.
