4 county schools use grant to get cafeteria equipment

Butler Area School District is supplying two of its elementary schools with a convection oven after receiving a $20,788 from a grant through the state Department of Education.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education awarded more than $2.7 million in grants to 130 local education agencies across the commonwealth to purchase new food service equipment for cafeterias, according to a news release from the Department of Education.

In addition to Broad Street and McQuistion elementary schools receiving $10,394 each, Freeport Area School District is getting $11,591 for two of its schools. Freeport Area Senior High School is using its $6,750 to buy a planetary mixer, and South Buffalo Elementary School is using its $4,841 to buy an electric booster heater.

Funding for the grants is made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Grants are awarded to schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program. Schools use the grants to purchase or upgrade equipment, such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves and dishwashers.
