Bernard J. “Bernie” Baker, 76, of Evans City, passed away on Feb. 21, 2023, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 5, 1946, in Ellwood City, and was the son of the late Clifford W. and Margaret (Roman) Baker.

He was a 1964 graduate of Zelienople High School, and served his country in the U.S. Army Military Police from 1965 to 1967.

Bernie was a master mechanic, and began his career with Ed Wagner Auto Salvage at age 15, and retired after 38 years as an equipment mechanic from Penn Power/First Energy in Zelienople.

Bernie was an avid reader and a former private pilot and had enjoyed car shows and local history. He was an active member of the Lancaster Township Historical Records Committee.

He enjoyed spending time in his garage and sharing his knowledge with friends and family. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed help.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sally, whom he married on Oct. 25, 1969; his two daughters, Jennifer (David) Vasil and Amy (David Sinclair) Baker; his nephew, Glenn (Diane) Baker; his great-niece, Sarah Baker; and his canine companion, Molly-Dog.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Shirley Baker.

BAKER — Family and friends of Bernard J. “Bernie” Baker, who died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at First Baptist Church, 221 W. New Castle St., Butler.

A celebration of life will immediately follow in the church with Pastor Dave Maitland officiating.

All services are through SPENCER D. GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 140 New Castle Road, Butler.
