SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — At a Monday meeting, township supervisors said there’s no evidence to suggest the community will be negatively affected by the Feb. 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

The board acknowledged correspondence from Butler County’s Department of Emergency Management, which stated Butler County has not been informed of any long-term effects from the incident.

“We got notice from Emergency Management that we shouldn’t be alarmed by anything,” said Paul Dickey, supervisor. “I don’t think there’s anything to be concerned about.”

Dickey elaborated that Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, is closer to the crash site and is more likely to be an area of concern than Butler County.

In addition, Slippery Rock Creek acts as a tributary to the Ohio River, meaning no waterways will be affected in the municipality.

“Streams flow away from us, water flows away from us,” Dickey said.

Secretary Karen Connell said the township has not received any concerns from residents regarding the derailment.
