Slippery Rock mayor up for association award

Slippery Rock Borough Council unanimously passed a resolution at a Tuesday, Feb. 21, meeting nominating Mayor Jondavid Longo for a Mayor of the Year Award.

The Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania gives the Mayor of the Year Award to a mayor who goes above and beyond the normal duties of mayor, is an ambassador for the borough, does special projects, and makes constituent service a No. 1 priority, according to the association’s website.

Denton Zeronas, council vice president, said Longo has been working to improve the borough since he was first elected five years ago.

“We've seen him bring in events to town, fund raise for Independence Day, fireworks celebrations. Whenever COVID happened, he helped fund raise to cover gift cards for service industry workers who may have been laid off,” Zeronas said. “Really, in my opinion, he exemplifies what someone who should be getting into these elected positions looks like.”

Longo said he was excited to have the confidence of the council, and to be seen by his constituents as someone who exemplifies the qualities of a good mayor.

“It's a great honor. I'm humbled by the unanimous approval of the council in this resolution and the nomination,” Longo said. “Even if I don't win the award, still it's a great honor to have the confidence and respect of borough council — it's enough to put a smile on my face.”

The award is presented at the annual meeting of the state association of boroughs convention, according to a fact sheet from the association about the award. Nominations for the award close March 12.
