KC sophomore Fritch excels in singing, scoring, shooting
KARNS CITY — An over-used phrase in sports is that somebody can “do it all.”
When it comes to Karns City sophomore Chloe Fritch, however, that phrase is spot on.
“Chloe has talent in many areas, doing many things,” Karns City girls basketball coach Steve Andreassi said of his guard. “She’s at the point now where she has to pick and choose what she wants to do.”
Fritch is averaging 12.5 points per game and is among the Gremlins’ leading scorers. She handles the ball quite a bit as well. An accomplished soccer player, she stopped playing that sport so she could concentrate on golf.
Fritch has been runner-up in the District 9 girls golf tournament during her freshman and sophomore seasons. She’s won the Foxburg Country Club Junior Championship. She also competes in track and field, running the 300-meter hurdles and 800 meters.
“Golf is my No. 1 sport,” Fritch said. “My family is very golf-oriented. I started swinging a club when I was around 2 years oldf. My goal right now is to win District 9, since I’ve come so close the last two times.
“I want to play golf in college, too, take the sport as far as I can.”
Besides being a multi-sport athlete, Fritch has a singing voice well-known in the Chicora area and beyond. She sings the national anthem before Gremlin home soccer, football and basketball games.
She sang the national anthem before a Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park when she was in second grade.
“My uncle teases me, says that the only song I know,” Fritch said, laughing. “I started carrying a tune when I was 3, just singing when I was by myself.”
Fritch performed in a school musical when she was in eighth grade. She hasn’t done one since: The preparation and practice for the musical conflicts with the girls basketball playoffs.
“Just another one of those tough decisions she had to make,” Andreassi said. “I’m glad she opted for basketball.”
Her singing may not be done just yet, though.
“You have to audition, then be selected to sing the anthem before a Pirates game,” Fritch said. “I tried out in fourth grade to sing at PNC Park again and fell just short. I’m thinking of trying again, just to get some redemption for myself.”
Fritch is competitive that way.
She enjoys hunting with her Uncle Scott. She bagged a 9-point buck two years ago.
“I love fishing and hunting,” she said. “It’s challenging and it’s good family time.”
The Fritch family is so serious about golf that it recently put a golf simulator in the home. Chloe is taking full advantage of it.
“She swings a golf club every day since they got that simulator,” Andreassi said. “She’s determined to golf in college and I know she’s gonna get there. I know how determined that girl is.
“She gives everything to every activity she does. You never get less than 100% from her. She’s so gifted and she’s a really nice kid. Chloe never stops working at getting better in everything she does.”
