Ohio man dies in Turnpike crash
An Ohio man died early Tuesday following a crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Allegheny County near the Butler Valley interchange.
Richard Francis Krupka, of Ohio, was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following the two-vehicle crash at 12:12 a.m. at mile marker 38.2 in Hampton Township, just west of the interchange, state police said.
Police said Krupka was traveling west when he lost control of his Nissan Versa and struck multiple median barriers. The crash disabled all the lights on the car, which came to rest around a bend in the highway on the center line of the westbound lanes with the driver’s door facing oncoming traffic, police said.
Another westbound vehicle approached and struck Krupka’s car, police said. The driver of the second car wasn’t able to see Krupka’s vehicle until it was too late to react, police said.
Three people were in the second vehicle. The backseat passenger suffered a broken arm, police said. No one else was hurt.
Both westbound lanes were closed until about 2:15 a.m. so state police accident reconstruction specialists from the Washington barracks could investigate the scene.
Firefighters from Hampton and Shaler townships responded to the crash.
