SRU baseball wins series

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The high-scoring Slippery Rock University baseball team struck again Saturday at West Virginia State.

The Rock (7-3) defeated WVSU 25-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. The run total was fourth-highest in Rock history and the 25-run victory margin set a program record. SRU has now scored at least 23 runs in three of its last four games.

SRU dropped the second game of the twinbill, 5-2. The Rock won the series with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.

Jon Kozarian had three hits, a home run, four runs scored and seven RBI in the two Saturday games. Luke Trueman had three hits and two RBI. Devin Dunn tossed a three-hit shout in the first game, striking out four.

Joey Purcell tossed seven scoreless innings for The Rock in the second game, but WVSU rallied late for the win.

Trueman and Mark Wilbur combined for the shutout Sunday. Trueman struck out nine in 7.2 innings and Wilbur escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to record his first collegiate save.

Joseph Ehand tripled and scored for SRU. Noah Ross added an RBI single.

SRU hosts Wilmington for a three-game series beginning Friday at Critchfield Park.

Softball

SRU split two games during its Florida trip Saturday, defeating Mercy, 6-2, and dropping a 14-2 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan.

Alexsa Hurd had four hits, including three doubles, and five RBI for The Rock. Arielle Brown tallied three hits and scored two runs.

The Rock (3-7) split two more games Sunday, shutting out St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-0, and dropping a 5-3 decision to Bloomfield. Kelsi Anderson was the starting and winning pitcher in the first game and Chloe Sharman recorded the save, her Rock-career record sixth.

Aubrey Mansfield had three hits and scored two runs in Sunday’s twinbill.
