Redevelopment authority reconstructing Kaufman Drive

Kaufman Drive in Butler will enter its second phase of reconstruction, with its intersection with Zeigler Avenue to be the next target of repaving this year.

Veronica Walker, executive director of the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Butler, said the authority’s board of directors Thursday, March 16, approved a bid from Hiles Excavating to rehabilitate the road, which has seen some decomposition over the past few years.

“It's the same work that was done on Lincoln Avenue to Kaufman Drive,” Walker said. “They will be taking out all the cement, breaking it up, getting it down to a good base, putting in a solid base with their materials and paving over it.”

Walker said the redevelopment authority received four bids for the project, and Hiles Excavating had the lowest bid of $441,760. She said the project may cause some traffic delays once work starts.

“They talked about closing one half of the street where people can drive by on,” Walker said. “I am hoping that it starts ASAP, to have the project done by the end of the year.”

Walker also said the development planned for Father Marinaro Park by Butler officials means the roads that lead to it may see more use. Getting the work done early is advantageous to the city, Walker said.

“I'm overjoyed,” Walker said. “Kaufman is in terrible condition. Once it's done, it's a great benefit to the tenants that are over there along with Father Marinaro Park.”
