Candidates lacking in many primary races
Many municipal offices open in the May 16 primary are lacking candidates to fill them, according to the Butler County Election Bureau.
Most of the offices without candidates are in boroughs, but one school district, a few townships and Butler City also have open offices that no one is running for.
Primary voters can write in names of candidates for open positions, but they can’t write names that already appear on the ballot.
In the Slippery Rock Area School District, incumbent Mark Taylor is the only candidate for two open positions to represent Region 1. He is running for the Republican Party nomination. School board members are elected to four year terms in office.
Incumbent Greg Schiller and challenger Matthew Karns are running for one open seat to represent Region 2. Both are seeking the Republican nomination.
For the two open Region 3 seats, incumbent Leslie Colosimo, who cross filed on the Republican and Democratic ballots, is the only candidate.
In Butler City, incumbent Councilman Daniel Herr is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for another term in office, but no candidates entered the race for a second open seat on council. Elected terms on council are four years.
No one is running for city controller, and there is only one candidate for six open constable positions.
An elected constable’s main role is to secure polling places and ensure election laws are followed, according to state statutes.
Clinton, Oakland and Parker townships each have one open supervisor’s position with no candidates. All three townships have auditors’ positions that didn’t draw any candidates, and Oakland Township has a constable’s position without a candidate.
All the boroughs in the county have at least one position with no candidates, and many have council seats that didn’t draw any candidates.
In Bruin, no one is running for the mayor’s office, which is currently vacant, and there are no candidates for four seats on council, including two vacant seats. Nor is anyone running for a constable’s position.
There are two candidates for the four open seats on Callery council, and no one is running for open positions for tax collector and constable.
In Cherry Valley, there are no candidates for any of the open positions for mayor, five council seats, a constable and an auditor.
Three council seats and a constable’s position in Chicora lack candidates.
Connoquenessing has two open positions on council and positions for an auditor and constable with no candidates.
In East Butler, there are two open council seats, but only one candidate, and there are no candidates for two auditor’s positions and a constable position.
One candidate is running for one of the two open council seats in Eau Claire, and there are no candidates for three auditor’s positions and a constable position.
In Evans City, no candidates are running for two council seats and a constable position.
There are no candidates for any of the open offices in Fairview. The positions are mayor, all three council seats, three auditor positions and a constable position.
Harmony has three candidates for four open council seats, and no one is running for constable.
No candidates running for any of the open offices in Harrisville. There are five council seats, three auditor positions and a constable position open in the primary.
In Karns City, there are no candidates running for any of the open positions, which are three council seats, three auditor positions, a tax collector and a constable position.
One candidate is running for one of the three open seats on Mars council
There are no candidates for mayor, five council seats, three auditor positions, tax collector or constable in Petrolia.
Portersville has no candidates for five council seats, tax collector or constable.
Tax collector and constable positions in Prospect drew no candidates.
Saxonburg has one candidate for three council seats and no candidates for tax collector or constable.
Seven Fields, Slippery Rock and Zelienople each have constable positions with no candidates.
In Valencia, no candidates are running for mayor, one of the three open seats on council, three auditor’s positions or tax collector.
West Liberty has no candidates for three council seats or three auditor’s positions.
West Sunbury lacks candidates for mayor, three council seats, three auditor’s positions, tax collector or constable.
March 7 was the last day for candidates to file nomination petition with the election bureau, and March 22 was the last day to withdraw petitions.
Incumbent Moniteau school board member Michael Baptiste withdrew from the primary.
