A two-story structure containing a garage, two vehicles and gym equipment was destroyed in fire Wednesday, March 29, night in Penn Township, according to officials.

Crews were called to the 200 block of West Jefferson Road, Penn Township, around 10 p.m. Police were first to arrive and reported flames coming through the roof of the two-story garage, an emergency services incident report showed.

Bill Glace, chief of Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department, said Thursday, March 30, that the garage housed a one-ton pickup truck and 2009 Mustang on the first floor and a “home gym” on the second floor.

“The roof caved in and everything was burning inside,” he said.

According to Glace, the homeowner reported working out in the garage that night and finishing around 7 p.m. After he shut everything off and went inside the home, he smelled smoke. He looked out and realized the garage was on fire.

“We’re leaning toward an electrical fire,” Glace said.

More crews were requested to get water to the scene via tankers, and a fire hydrant was used along Dinnerbell Road to knock the fire down, he said.

The fire was extinguished more than half an hour after the official call, according to dispatch.

Glace said firefighters feared the blaze would overtake a second garage nearby, but they were able to prevent it.

Crews remained on site cleaning up until nearly 1 a.m.

Volunteer fire companies from Saxonburg and Herman, and Buffalo and Middlesex townships, as well as Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, Middlesex police and Butler Ambulance Service all responded to the scene.
