7-year-old girl wounded by accidental gunshot in Venango County
A 7-year-old girl is in stable but critical condition following an accidental gunshot wound to the head last week, state police in Venango County said Tuesday, April 4.
On March 31, police said they responded to reports of a wounded child at a residence on Route 62 in Cranberry Township, Venango County. The individuals staying at the home are originally from Indiana.
The incident occurred in the dining room area as an individual attempted to load a 9 mm handgun, according to police. As he loaded it, the individual placed his hand on the trigger and caused a single round to be shot from the chamber of the gun.
The bullet struck the 7-year-old girl, who was standing on the other side of the table, police said. It struck her in the front of her head and exited the back of her head.
State police said troopers on scene performed life-saving care until emergency services arrived. The girl was taken to UPMC Northwest in Seneca and later transferred to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
The case is still under investigation. Police said Tuesday that the girl is in stable but critical condition.
