Connoquenessing Township needs a second polling place

Supervisors consider using the municipal building

There is only one polling place for election days in Connoquenessing Township, which is the National Guard Armory at 250 Kriess Road, but the municipality may open a new one for future elections.

Andrew Menchyk, Connoquenessing Township solicitor, said Thursday, April 6, that the township supervisors are in talks with Butler County election officials about using the municipal building as a polling place.

“If I understand it, the population warrants a second polling place, and so there has been a search as to what would be an appropriate polling place,” Menchyk said. “It is something still being discussed between the county and the township and being considered by supervisors.”

Menchyk said the topic came up at a meeting of the Connoquenessing Township supervisors on Wednesday, April 5. He said the supervisors may discuss creating a new polling place at their next meeting.

Sewer authority

Menchyk also said the supervisors addressed several points for the Connoquenessing Township Sewer Authority board. The supervisors voted two to one at their Wednesday meeting to reappoint Laura Mason to the board, and also accepted the resignation of its longest-serving member, Calvin Wonderly.

Mason’s term is for five years, and Menchyk said the supervisors are looking for someone to fill out Wonderly’s term, which lasts until the end of 2023.

“They discussed the vacancy last night (Wednesday) but took no action and want to review and evaluate different candidates for that position,” Menchyk said.

Lambert Rosenbaum, chairman of the Connoquenessing Township Sewer Authority board, said the supervisors also gave the sewer authority the ability to update the township’s sewer plan. Menchyk said the authority received $664,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act, administered by Butler County, which can be used to hire engineers to work on a plan.

Rosenbaum also said the township supervisors reimbursed the sewer authority $3,695, which it used to pay for an engineering firm.

“It's a cooperative spirit between us that they're utilizing the authority to do the plan,” Rosenbaum said, as “537 work is done for the entire municipality and that should come from the township revenue.”

According to Rosenbaum, the authority has looked into working with Pennsylvania American Water, which is in the process of purchasing the Butler Area Sewer Authority’s assets, for input in creating a sewer plan for Connoquenessing Township.

“We spoke with Pennsylvania American Water, and they are really receptive to work with us,” Rosenbaum said. “We had a conversation with them, and it has been positive.”
