John A. Schuller, 87, of Buffalo Township passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

John was born in Harwick, Pa., on Oct. 14, 1935, a son of the late Bertha L. (Rossman) and Peter J. Schuller.

John quit school at an early age opting to work as a machine operator for Bob Leslie Excavating. Upon reaching legal age, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following an early honorable discharge due to a medical condition, he went to work with the railroad, which led to a career with Pullman Standard. He worked his way up through the company, excelling in required college courses that earned him a position as superintendent of the paint department. After the closing of the Pullman Standard plant in Butler, John accepted a superintendent position with Rescar and relocated to Texas. Upon his retirement from Rescar, John and his wife moved back to Sarver.

Through the years John, along with his wife, owned many businesses, including two junk yards, one in Buffalo Township and one in Fawn Township; a tire shop; and two Janice Bait & Tackle stores, one in the BJ section of Freeport and one in Leechburg. They also delivered newspapers for various publishers throughout the years in both Texas and Pennsylvania, most recently being the Butler Eagle for a notable 16 years. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, watching old Westerns, listening to gospel music and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janice (Prager) Schuller; six children, Cheryl (David) Schaeffer, Diane (Jeffrey) Olson, Susann (Joseph) Watt, Daniel (Tammy) Schuller, Beverly (Adam) Rogacki and Amy (David) Ingram; 19 grandchildren, Autumn, Robert, Cheri, Adam, Jamie, Sarah, Kaleb, Danielle, Joseph, Phillip, Monica, Jeramy, Erica, Constance, David, John, Sam, Andrew and Jeanna; 25 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Jon, Keilan, Declan, Warren, Joseph, Victoria, Anthony, Noah, Kally, Jenna, Carter, Tavien, Donavin, Joseph, A’Maurie, Zarah, Katora, Gavin, Peyton, Mason, Orion, Nicholas, Logan and Blaz; and nine great-great-grandchildren, Levi, Madison, Carter, Violet, Hunter, Kyler, Indica, Pharaoh and Atreus. He is also survived by one brother, Andrew (Donna) Schuller; a sister-in-law, Martha Schuller; and a brother-in-law, Donald (Jodi) Prager.

John was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Connie and Carol; two grandchildren, Randy J. Schuller and Amber R. Harbison; one great-grandchild, Mackenzie Weltner; and three brothers and their spouses, Peter (Betty) Schuller, George (Janet) Schuller and Ralph Schuller; and one sister, Patricia Schuller (Tom Ostrowski) (Norb Olzak) Olzak.

SCHULLER — Family and friends of John A. Schuller, who died Sunday, April 2, 2023, will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in REDMOND FUNERAL HOME, 524 High St., Freeport.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Mother of God Church in Freeport, with Monsignor Gilbert Gente officiating. The family extends an open invitation to a luncheon at the church hall following the service.

A family burial will be held on a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Freeport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 444 Liberty Ave., #1300, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or to Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, 290 Horne Ave., Saxonburg, PA 16056.
