Betz 100th birthday
Daryl Betz of Renfrew celebrated his 100th birthday with an open house April 23 at the Hidden Meadows Clubhouse in Renfrew.
He was born April 24, 1923, in Oil City. He married Eleanor Holly on May 14, 1946, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Chicora. She is deceased.
He has one child, Karen Betz of Cranberry Township.
He graduated from Kittanning High School and Kittanning Business College. He served in the 710th Tank Battalion of the Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946 and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving in the Palau Islands in the South Pacific. In addition, he was in combat in the Philippine Islands.
He was employed in the Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic of the Butler Veterans Hospital and then as a certified ophthalmology technician and supervisor of the Optical Shop with the Ophthalmology Associates in Sewickley, retiring in 1989.
He is a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where he formed the Good News Sunday School Class, which he taught for 38 years, served as president of the congregation for two terms, and was a member of the Church Council for several years,
He is a member of the United Commercial Travelers, AARP and American Legion. He and his wife were former members of the Keystone Squares and enjoyed outdoor activities and traveling.
