Police: Sword fight with sticks leads to charges for 2 men
Butler City police are accusing two men of using sticks to sword fight.
A man was taken to a hospital for a facial injury after the fight, and Thomas G. Eiler, Jr., 21, and Michael A. Simmer, 40, were charged with misdemeanor simple assault and summary harassment.
Police said around 3:30 p.m. April 11, callers reported an assault in the 300 block of East Locust Street. An ambulance was called to respond for a male bleeding from the head.
Officers said Eiler and Simmer told them the fight was over the possession of a speaker and a bicycle. Simmer crossed the street to confront Eiler and an altercation ensued.
Wooden sticks were used in the fight, each between 3 and 4 feet long and 1-inch thick, witnesses told police. Cellphone footage showed the men “posturing to fight with sticks in their hands” and screaming profanities at each other.
Police said Eiler was bleeding from the left side of his face when they arrived. Simmer admitted to striking Eiler, and footage showed Simmer striking him once with a stick.
Eiler was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital by Butler Ambulance Service for the injury.
The charges were filed last week. Both men are scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing June 5 before District Judge William Fullerton.
