Bystanders help save driver’s life after Zelie crash

Matt Springer is accustomed to jumping into action at the scene of a vehicle accident.

What the lieutenant for Harmony Volunteer Fire District is not used to are civilians offering their assistance on scene, which happened at a crash in Zelienople on Friday night.

The bystanders were able to save the driver’s life, as he was found unconscious at the scene.

“It wasn’t just me. It took a lot of people to save that man’s life,” he said.

Springer heard a dispatch for the crash at New Castle and Linden streets around 10:30 p.m. as he was returning home from a friend’s house.

“I didn’t plan on responding, but I figured, I’m pretty close,” he said.

When he arrived, he saw that a vehicle had crashed into a utility pole, and three people were trying to unlock the driver’s door. The driver was unconscious and unresponsive, Springer said.

“I went back to my truck to grab a hammer to break a window,” he said. “I heard the window break.”

The bystanders had broken the rear driver’s side window, according to Springer. One of the bystanders was a nurse.

“She crawled through the back window, unlocked the door, and administered CPR,” he said. “(The driver) was not breathing, and his pulse was faint.”

EMS personnel responded and transported the male driver to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Springer said.

Springer said he did not have an update on the driver’s condition and is unsure how the crash occurred.

The nurse who assisted on scene respectfully declined to comment on the incident.

After five years as a firefighter, Springer said he had knowledge of CPR and first aid for situation’s such as this one.

He was grateful for the help from others.

“I don’t think it’s too often you have someone jump in and help like (the nurse) did. I didn’t even get her name, we just worked together immediately,” he said. “I was just doing what any one of my fire/EMS colleagues would have done. I don’t take much credit. It was a group effort.”
