Toy gun near Emily Brittain causes lockdown, police said

A person with a toy gun near Emily Brittain Elementary School in Butler caused alarm Friday morning, May 5, and placed the school into a perimeter lockdown, police said.

Butler city police said around 8:50 a.m., they received report of a male leaning out of a window with a gun near the school at 338 N. Washington St.

The school enacted a perimeter lockdown out of an abundance of caution, police said.

Brian White, superintendent of Butler Area School District, said a perimeter lockdown was advised by police as the situation was investigated.

“In a perimeter lockdown, no one goes in and out, but the kids move about freely in the building,” he said. “We try to be supportive of what’s suggested by police.”

Officers at the school and city police determined that the report was about a toy gun and that the situation was not dangerous.

Parents were notified via text message and email about the perimeter lockdown, which was lifted in the early afternoon.
