11-year-old girl injured from Friday crash involving deer

An 11-year-old girl was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for serious injuries from a Friday, May 5, crash when a deer went through a vehicle’s windshield, state police said.

The crash occurred south of the intersection of Route 8 and Mahood Road at approximately 5:26 p.m.

Police said Jacob Roegnik, 29, of Sarver, and a passenger were traveling north on Route 8 in a Honda Pilot. A deer entered Roegnik’s lane of travel, causing him to hit it.

The deer was launched into the oncoming lane of travel, striking the windshield of a Ford Taurus driven by Keri Pavelek, 42, of Slippery Rock.

Pavelek’s 11-year-old female passenger was flown via LifeFlight to UPMC Children’s Hospital for suspected serious injuries.

Unionville Volunteer Fire Company and Butler Ambulance Service also responded to the crash.
