Driver identified, investigation ongoing for Tuesday crash at Route 8, Hansen Ave intersection
BUTLER TWP — Township police have identified the driver who was injured in a rollover crash at the intersection of Route 8 and Hansen Avenue, near Picklegate Crossing, Tuesday morning, May 9.
Police said Robert A. Murtha, 48, of Butler, was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for injuries suffered in the 8 a.m. crash, which damaged a traffic signal at the intersection.
Murtha was traveling in a Kia Stinger on Picklegate Crossing toward Route 8. He failed to negotiate a curve, driving onto the cement island on Route 8, according to police.
Murtha then struck a utility pole on the island, which rolled his vehicle over, police said. The vehicle traveled across Route 8 and into the hillside on the northbound berm.
The vehicle came to rest on its roof in the northbound lanes, which were closed until the roadway was cleared.
When the crash was first reported, dispatchers said Murtha was in the vehicle and not breathing. A LifeFlight helicopter was requested shortly after.
Police said charges are pending further investigation.
Traffic was briefly blocked near the intersection and afterward was controlled by four-way stop signs due to the crash’s impact. The traffic signal was repaired Wednesday afternoon.
