Rockets raking with regularity

SLIPPERY ROCK — Hitting with the bases loaded doesn’t make Brett Galcik nervous at all.

In fact, the Slippery Rock High School senior relishes such situations.

He came to the plate with the sacks jammed three times Friday in a home game against West Middlesex, belting a grand slam on the final opportunity in the Rockets’ 11-4 baseball victory.

Galcik popped to second base with the bases loaded to close out a four-run Slippery Rock second inning. He beat out a chopper to third for an infield hit with the sacks full in the fourth.

His towering home run to left with the bases loaded capped a five-run fifth inning and broke the game open.

“Brett is the heart of our lineup,” Slippery Rock coach Derrick Wood said. “There’s no one we’d rather have up with the bases loaded than him.”

Galcik has hit a grand slam in successive games, having hit one in a 14-0 win over Titusville earlier in the week. He also hit a grand slam in a scrimmage game this season, along with one as a junior and another as a sophomore.

“I just try to stand in there and relax, not get too frustrated if it doesn’t go my way,” Galcik said. “Baseball is a game of failures. You’re going to fail more times than you succeed.”

Galcik succeeds plenty, however. He entered Friday’s game with a .490 batting average and he has five home runs on the season. As a team, Slippery Rock (10-5) has scored 38 runs in its last three games.

That’s why the Rockets weren’t too bothered by West Middlesex (10-6) grabbing 4-0 lead in the first inning and a half.

“We know we can score plenty of runs to make up for that,” Wood said.

Neither team used much experience on the mound Friday. Nick Kingerski started for Slippery Rock — only his second start of the season — and threw 53 pitches in two innings. A two-run single by Devin Gruves in the second inning highlighted the Big Reds’ early 4-0 surge.

Galcik made his first mound appearance of the season to begin the third inning. He pitched three scoreless frames and got the win. Isaac McCandless, a freshman, tossed two scoreless innings to close out the triumph.

“We had two big section games earlier this week and have two more early next week,” Wood said. “We wanted to keep our prime pitchers available. I was very pleased with the efforts we got on the mound today.”

The Rockets got to West Middlesex freshman left-hander Kyle Gilson with a four-run second to knot the game. Lucas Allison lined a two-run double to center and No. 9 hitter Dom Zandi lined a run-scoring single to left to tie the game.

Every player in Slippery Rock’s lineup reached base Friday.

“We can hit the ball from top to bottom,” Galcik said. “I love hitting fourth because guys are always on base when I come up.”

Galcik’s bases-loaded single in the fourth gave Slippery Rock the lead. Dylan Gordon grounded into a force play to plate another run that inning.

Sal Mineo drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth before Galcik drilled the grand slam.

“This was our fifth game in five days,” West Middlesex coach Kolten Hoffman said. “We were thin on pitching and threw freshmen and sophomores today.

“We’re not going to cancel a game on an 80-degree day because we’re low on pitching. I told these guys to go out there and compete, have fun, get better and we did that. We were down 6-4 and in the game when Brett put a good swing on a pitch and took us out of it.

“We battled today. Slippery Rock can really hit the ball,” Hoffman added.

West Middlesex was limited to four hits on the day. Gordon and Zandi had two singles each, Galcik the single and homer to lead the Rockets’ nine-hit attack. Slippery Rock received 13 runners by either error, walk or hit batsman. The Big Reds received 11 that way.

There were eight hit batsmen in the game.

“That’s young pitching,” Hoffman said.
