Butler’s Geibel, Young score 1st holes-in-one at out-of-town golf outing
COLUMBIANA, Ohio — Bob Geibel, 81, waited nearly 60 years to sink his first hole-in-one. He was happy to share the moment Monday at The Links at Firestone Farms in Columbiana, Ohio.
Fellow Butler resident Regis Young, 75, scored his first career hole-in-one on the same day on the same course, as part of a 20-person golf outing from Butler.
“You always want to do this with somebody else,” Geibel said of shooting an ace. “It cuts the bar bill in half.”
“Sharing the cost ... definitely a good thing,” Young agreed.
Geibel scored his ace on the No. 2, 122-yard hole, using a hybrid 11-wood. Young secured his hole-in-one on the No. 15, 120-yard hole, using a 6-iron.
They have been part of a traveling group of golfers for years. This group plays Mondays and Thursdays. Geibel and Young play in another traveling group on Thursdays.
“I’ve probably been part of this group for 25 years or so,” Geibel said. “Regis came in a little later, but we’ve golfed together for a long time.
“I shot a 9 on the first hole (Monday) ... hit a ball into the water, hit another one here, another one there, it just wasn’t good That hole was still bothering me when I teed the ball up on No. 2.”
There was a sand trap in front of the green, so Geibel and the rest of his foursome could not see the ball actually land.
“It was coming down by the flag. We figured it’d be close by,” Geibel said. “When I saw the ball in the hole ... I was still thinking about that 9 I got on No. 1, so I didn’t enjoy the moment all that much. But I guess that shot was one of the things that brought me back.”
Geibel averages an 88 for 18 holes. He shot a 93 on this day.
“I want to average 5 for each hole. A 9 and a 1, I guess that works out,” he said.
Young and Geibel were not part of the same foursome. Young was unaware that Geibel had shot a hole-in-one when he teed his ball up on No. 15.
“I was hitting over water, so I wanted to make sure I was using enough club,” Young said of using a 6-iron. “The ball hit the flag and caromed right into the hole.
“I was pumped up when somebody told me Bob got one earlier. I guess it is kind of an odd thing.”
Delmar Campbell, Director of Golf at the course, said there were three holes-in-one scored at Firestone Farms this year before Geibel and Young connected on Monday.
“Even getting two on the course in one day is rare,” Campbell said of holes-in-one. “Getting two as part of the same outing? If that’s happened before here, I don’t remember it. It would have been a long time ago.”
Young said Butler’s traveling golf group will go as far as an hour away to play.
“Eastern Ohio, courses throughout Butler County, that’s about the extent of it,” he said.
They’ll remember this particular outing.
“I’ve scratched one of my bucket list,” Geibel said. “That feels pretty good.”
