Butler library to host FBI presentation on elder fraud

The Butler Area Public Library will host an informational session by the FBI at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, to educate individuals on elder fraud and how to combat it.

The program will be held at the library, 218 N. McKean St.

Each year, millions of Americans over the age of 60 fall victim to financial scams, many of which are perpetrated over the internet, including advance fee, lottery and romance scams, among others.

According to the FBI’s annual report, 2022 saw an 84% increase in elder crimes over 2021, with $3.1 billion stolen from elderly Americans over the 12-month period. Pennsylvania ranked eighth out of 57 U.S. states and territories in terms of elder crimes, with 2,901 victims over age 60 losing more than $80 million.

“Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite,” the FBI said. “They also usually have financial savings, own a home and have good credit — all of which make them attractive to scammers.”

No registration is necessary to participate in the event.
