10 acres burn in Clay Township brush fire

A brush fire reported at 12:30 p.m. today in West Sunbury extended to 10 acres in the woods behind Byers Road. The fire was contained and does not pose a risk to any structures at this time. The full extent of the damage caused by the fire is not yet known.

Slippery Rock Fire Rescue, Marion Township Fire Department and Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department were among the fire companies to arrive at the scene.

At around 1:45 p.m. an additional team of firefighters and paramedics from Butler County set up on Route 308 across from Finney Lane to try to contain the fire from the other side. No injuries were reported.

“We got refills and rehab and all that set up over there,” said Mike King, fire lieutenant of Oneida Valley Fire Rescue.

The fire was reported out and firefighters left the scene around 4 p.m.

Firefighters are not sure what caused the fire. The heat, lack of rain and amount of dry organic plant material such as dead branches are among some of the things that could have sparked the brush fire or caused its spread. The dry weather in Butler County has led to an increase of brush fires this year.
