Butler County under Code Orange on Monday, DEP advises

A Code Orange Air Quality Action Day was issued for Monday, June 19, in Butler County by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Though high temperatures and sun will be the primary focus outdoors, the DEP forecast predicts smoke from Canadian wildfires will continue to add pollutants to local air.

Code Orange Air Quality Action Days indicate that young children, elderly individuals, and people with respiratory problems like asthma, emphysema and bronchitis are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

AirNow, a partnership of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other federal agencies, recommends that sensitive groups limit time outside, or participate in less strenuous activities.

Other areas of the state were issued a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day on Saturday, June 17, according to DEP. Those areas included Bucks, Lehigh, Lancaster, Berks Philadelphia, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre counties.

Butler’s air quality is expected to improve throughout the week, forecasts showed.

By Tuesday, June 20, air quality conditions are expected to be moderate, meaning those who are unusually sensitives to particle pollution should limit their time outdoors.

To reduce ozone air pollution, the DEP suggests residents can limit vehicle travel, conserve electricity and refuel cars after dusk.
