KC board considers Chicora school name change

FAIRVIEW TWP — The Karns City Area School District board is entertaining the idea of a name change at Chicora Elementary School.

Superintendent Eric Ritzert said that, although they have informally discussed the possibility in the past, it was time to solidify plans.

“As we approach the consolidation of our remaining two elementary schools, it could be a good opportunity,” Ritzert said at the board’s Monday night meeting.

Once the renovations and expansion project at Chicora Elementary is completed, Sugarcreek Elementary School is set to close its doors. The current goal, according to Ritzert, is to have everything done and the consolidation completed by fall 2024.

While the proposed name was initially just “Karns City Elementary,” Brenda Ealey, board vice president, suggested amending it to “Karns City Area Elementary,” earning agreement from the other directors.

Ritzert said another reason they need to decide on the change is due to the construction itself, as the architects working on the Chicora project — Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates — have to be made aware of the plans to have the proper signs made.

While no formal action was taken at the meeting, Ritzert said the board seemed in agreement with the plan, which could be voted on later.
