GCC professor to conduct free Butler symphony concert
Jeffrey Tedford, a music professor and orchestral director at Grove City College, will serve as guest conductor for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s “Music Under the Stars” concert.
The concert, which marks Tedford’s conducting debut with the symphony, will begin at 7:30 p.m. June 29 at Cranberry Township Community Park amphitheater. Band Together Pittsburgh, whose mission is to create music with people on the autism spectrum, will kick off the show. Admission to the concert is free.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this outstanding orchestra,” Tedford said. “This concert will showcase the talents of these musicians and allow us to share this patriotic music with our local community.”
To kick off the Fourth of July holiday, the symphony will perform selections ranging from patriotic favorites and popular show tunes in a celebration of America, including music by John Williams, George M. Cohan, Aaron Copeland and Leonard Bernstein. The concert will conclude with Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
John Furman, executive director of the Butler County Symphony Association, said that the concert is an opportunity for the public to learn about the professional symphony and come to realize the musical asset available to them in Butler County.
“I don’t think most people are aware that the orchestra exists and how good it is,” he said. “They’re very fortunate to have this in Butler. This is not the way most small towns in America work.”
"Music Under the Stars,“ now in its second year running, is made possible by a grant from the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, Furman said.
People planning to attend should take a chair or blanket for seating.
