For the second consecutive day, smoke from Canadian Wildfires has prompted the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to declare a Code Red Air Quality Action Day for the entire state.

During Code Red conditions, young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis are particularly vulnerable to the poor air quality and should avoid outdoor activity. All others should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.

The DEP also warns that depending on the area, air quality conditions may reach Code Purple, a level of urgency above Code Red. During Code Purple conditions, the aforementioned groups should take no chances and avoid all outdoor activity whatsoever.

According to the DEP, conditions will likely be worse in the morning, as an atmospheric phenomena called a “temperature inversion” will trap smoke closer to the ground and prevent it from rising high into the atmosphere.

Residents are strongly encouraged to help during Air Quality Action Days by avoiding the open burning of leaves and avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.
